5 Ways To Commit Success Suicide

Thursday, February 18, 2010, 0 Comments

You have heard us speak over and over again about dreams and desire. It is our deepest belief that everyone has these things. We all dream of what we really want to do but very few of us ever turn those dreams into actual reality. Instead of surrendering to our desires and doing whatever it takes to achieve them, we murder those dreams. David J. Schwartz, author of The Magic Of Thinking Big, states that there are 5 weapons used to “commit success suicide”. These must be destroyed.

1. Self-Depreciation. Too many people destroy their desire with the old negative self-depreciation language: “I would like to be a doctor/musician/excecutive but I can’t do it.” They utter things like “I lack the experience”, “I lack the education”, or “I’d fail if I tried.” Do not tell yourself that you do not believe in yourself, when you do, you give life to failure.

2. “Security-itis”. This is the person who says, “I am secure just where I am,” and in doing so uses the security weapon to murder their dream.

3. Competition. Remarks such as, “There are already too many people vying for that position” or “the field is already so overcrowded”, are merely excuses demonstrating fear of competition. This will kill desire fast. Do not allow competition to hold you back, use it to motivate you.

4. Parental Dictation. Hundreds, even thousands of young people determine their career choice according to what their parents want and expect them to do. What’s interesting to realize though, is that most parents do not intentionally dictate to their children what they want them to do, often they get confused in the encouragement part and the message of success gets confused. This can be helped by the young person patiently explaining why he or she prefers a different career, and if the parent will listen, there will be no friction. The objectives of both the young person and the parent are identical: success.

5. Family Responsibility. This is the attitude that says, “I should have done that a few years ago but now I have a family so I really can’t change”, is a perfect illustration of this kind of desire murder weapon.

It is crucial to dispose of these murder weapons! The only way to gain complete power and momentum in your life is to do what you really want to do. It is never to late to surrender to your dreams. In doing so you will gain the energy you need to accomplish your desires. Successful people throw excuses to the wind and set their eyes on a goal.
