Just a Quarter Inch Could Change Your Life

Monday, March 22, 2010, 3 Comments

I have just finished a brilliant, life-transforming book titled _The Slight Edge_ by renowned author, Jeff Olson. In a mere 163 pages, Olson coaches us on the Slight Edge and the significant, yet miniscule ways in which we can make it work either for us or against us. In a nutshell, the baby steps you take every single day (or don’t) will move you closer and closer to your destination, either for better or for worse.

The slight edge is always present in winning. What makes Michael Phelps the best swimmer in the world? He practices every day, not every day but Sunday, not every day except Christmas, EVERY DAY. Phelps knew that this daily act will put him at least a day ahead of the competition. It’s a daily decision, that for Phelps, was easy to do, but it’s also easy not to do. The difference that makes him a winner, is that he did it.

Do you know what makes the difference between a .300-hitting baseball star with a multimillion-dollar contract and a .260-plus player making only an average salary? Less than one additional hit per week over the course of the season. And you know what makes the difference between getting that hit and striking out? About one quarter-inch up or down on the bat!

The process might not be exciting, but it sure is exciting when you finally get to experience the results.

Winners get to where they are by making mundane, quiet, little slight edge decisions and repeating simple disciplines, day in and day out. They may not be exciting or seem like much today but at the end of the season wouldn’t you rather be like Michael Phelps on the medal platform? Wouldn’t you rater be the multimillionaire hitter over the average one?
